It is with extreme regret that we re- cord the death of a fine young soldier in the person of Sergeant Arthur Deans, son of Mr J. R. Deans, managing clerk for Mr B. S. Herring, Maryborough, word having been received by Mr Deans on Tuesday that his son was killed in action in France. As a scholar, Ser- geant Deans had a brilliant career. Starting at the Prince Alfred school, Talbot, under Mr K. Ellis (at present acting head teacher of school 404), he gained a scholarship. His next step was Queen's College, Maryborough, from which he matriculated, and entered Scotch College, and then took the classical side of the arts course at the University, obtaining exhibitions each year. At the time of enlisting Sergeant Deans was a student at law, and was at- tached to the artillery. Much sympathy will be felt for Mr and Mrs Deans in the loss of such a fine young son. —"Stand- ard."
